1) Stop Using generic Job Descriptions
When searching for a project manager position, many advertised positions seem to too generic and copied out of a book. Instead of these boring requirements, spend time actually describing the position and details of the actual project. While every project manager should be capable of working on any kind of project, you will benefit by hiring someone passionate about the project.
2) Decide exactly what you really need
If a project involves computer networking, you need someone that has an understanding of the specific differences in technology or someone who needs to know routers and switchers. Different projects require different professions and skill sets. Decide on what you truly need and who can help.
3) Critical Projects Need Dedicated Managers
With cost-cutting measures taking place in a lot of firms, managers are being asked to do more with less people. A project manager in many cases is expected not to just lead the project but assist in a number of smaller projects as well.
4) If You Need a Specific Methodology Used, Say So
If you need a PMBOK project manager, say you are a Project Management Institute shop in the job description. Again, this will help you reduce the number of applicants. If you need Just in Time, Six Sigma, etc., just say so. If you aren’t sure or have a variety of processes, then say you need a project manager that has experience in a variety of project management methods and can adjust as needed.
